Circa 1900s.
Size. The outer pair 85cm high x 24cm diameter. The larger single one 91cm high x 28cm diameter.
Auckland’s tramline opened in 1902, and these decorative toppers once adorned the poles that supported the power lines. They’re a fascinating piece of New Zealand Railways (NZR) history, still in their original green paint. Made of cast iron, they were likely produced in railway workshops or imported from the UK—possibly even used as ballast in the holds of steamships traveling to and from our shores at the time.
Motat are still operating this system at Western Springs.
