Ancient Beginnings of Glass Creation
Naturally occurring obsidian or volcanic glass was once a handy tool used to produce knives, arrowheads, jewellery, and even money. Nowadays, it is one of the most sought-after forms of vintage glass available.
Man-made glass first began entering the stocks of merchants as early as 5000BC in the region of Syria, according to Roman Historian Pliny. However, further archaeological evidence may now suggest that man-made glass was first seen in Eastern Mesopotamia and Egypt around 3500BC – while glass vessels didn’t appear until about 1500BC.
The ability to craft vessels saw the glass industry explode. The regions of Egypt, Syria and the other countries along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean were the centres of glass manufacturing in the ancient world.
Glass Manufacturing Through the Ages
The early days of glass manufacturing were tough and extremely slow. Furnaces were small, and the heat produced was barely enough to melt glass. However, the invention of the blowpipe by Syrian craftsmen in the 1st century BC fanned the flames of the glass industry and reignited its relevance. This revolutionary discovery made glass production easier, faster, and cheaper, which is why so many vintage glass products survived.
Glass production flourished in the Roman Empire and spread from Italy to all countries under its rule. In 1000 AD, the Egyptian city of Alexandria was the most important centre of glass manufacture. Throughout Europe, the miraculous art of making stained glass on churches and cathedrals across the continent reached its height in the finest Chartres and Canterbury cathedral windows produced in the 13th and 14th centuries.
